Imtiaz Ali hopes Amar Singh Chamkila wins National Award after IFFM win: “It is made out of metros and mini-metros, and it goes into the heartland of India”

Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali is riding high on the success of his directorial venture, Amar Singh Chamkila. The biopic on the legendary Punjabi singer has garnered critical acclaim and a strong following since its release on Netflix. The film recently bagged the prestigious Breakout Film of the Year award at the 15th Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM). This recognition has further solidified the film's position as a critical and commercial success.

Breakout Film of the Year Encouraged by the positive response, Ali expressed his hope that Amar Singh Chamkila will continue its winning streak at the National Awards during a chat with PTI in Melbourne. He drew a parallel with his previous film, Gulmohar, which won multiple National Awards despite being a direct-to-digital release.

In his words, “There was confusion about whether films that are released direct-to-digital will be allowed to participate in National Awards but I think there’s a verdict on that now which is in favour of direct-to-digital films. I’m hoping the National Awards will look kindly on Amar Singh Chamkila.”

Ali further added, “What I personally liked about the film is that it is made out of metros and mini-metros, and it goes into the heartland of India, where most of the country lives. I’m hopeful that the population of the country will appreciate that.”

The filmmaker also shared his gratitude for the love and support the film has received, acknowledging that the Breakout Film Award is a significant milestone for the entire team. Future Projects Beyond the success of Amar Singh Chamkila, Ali is already working on new projects. While details are still under wraps, he revealed that his next film will explore a unique and unconventional love story.
