Twinkle Khanna praises Stree franchise for role reversal: “Safer for women to encounter ghosts than men in dark”

Actor-turned-author Twinkle Khanna has lauded the latest installment of the Stree franchise, starring Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor. In her column for The Times of India, Khanna praised the film for its brilliant role reversal, where women are depicted as safer in the dark with ghosts than with men.

A Role Reversal in Horror Films Khanna's column, titled 'Why Ghosts Don't Scare the Indian Stree,' observed that horror films often contain fewer unsettling elements than the frightening realities we encounter daily. She cited recent incidents of violence against women as examples, highlighting the need for societal change.

"Fifty years on this planet, and I find that we are still teaching our daughters the same things that I was taught as a child," Khanna wrote. "Don’t go alone. To the park, to school, to work. Don’t go alone with any man, even if it’s your uncle, cousin or friend. Don’t go alone in the morning or evening, and especially not at night. Don’t go alone because it is not a matter of if, but when. Don’t go alone because you may never come back." A Call for Safety Measures Khanna explained the importance of enforcing laws and ensuring safety measures for women in public spaces. She argued that until these measures are in place, women in India are safer encountering a ghost in a dark alley than a man. The Stree franchise, Khanna noted, presents a stark contrast to the types of stories her grandmother would tell her and her sister, Rinkie Khanna, to scare them away from wandering off to the nearby Juhu beach.

Directed by Amar Kaushik, Stree 2 has been a box office success, recently crossing the Rs 400 crores mark. The film features Shraddha Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, Aparshakti Khurana and Abhishek Banerjee along with cameos by Akshay Kumar, Tamannaah Bhatia, and Varun Dhawan.
